Transportation is today a significant contributor to the global energy consumption and to greenhouse gas emissions. Reduction of CO2 emissions both in manufacturing and in use-phase are therefore key targets, in many cases enforced by binding legislation, for technical developments in this sector. Aluminium alloys as a material for building cars, trucks, aeroplanes or trains offer an excellent combination of cost-efficient solutions for lightweight design. Constellium is a leading supplier of aluminium semi-fabricated products to aerospace and automotive industries and we are continuously developing new and improved alloys and products that allows for even further weight- and cost reduction.
The aim of this presentation is to highlight how the continued need for weight reduction leads to ever increasing demands for corrosion resistance and corrosion management. For many structural transport applications, weight reduction in aluminium design is achieved by developing higher strength alloys; a significant challenge is to obtain the higher strength levels without compromise in final product resistance to structural or cosmetic corrosion. Specifically we will give examples of successful development for automotive body-in-white applications where a new generation of aluminium alloys allows for more than 40% weight reduction compared to incumbent steel solutions, while being fully compatible with a vehicle life-time guarantee against structural and cosmetic corrosion. Other examples will be given for heat exchangers application where new multi-clad products open for further down-gauging in traditional HVAC applications as well as offer the possibility of replacing stainless steel in very aggressive environments linked to exhaust gas recirculation. Finally we will highlight the very successful development of Constellium Airware, a range of new solutions in aluminium-lithium alloys for the aviation industry. Aluminium-Lithium alloys offer substantial benefits in terms of weight and cost savings with their low density, excellent fatigue and damage tolerance properties and good thermal stability combined with significant improvements in corrosion resistance versus incumbent aluminium alloys.
