Conventional high temperature corrosion protection concepts rely on the function of a protective oxide scale on the material surface during the high temperature exposure process, provided that there is a sufficient reservoir of the scale forming alloying element in the subsurface zone. This can be achieved either byusing high alloy materials or by applying a coating with optimized alloy composition. In recent years several non-conventional concepts for high temperature corrosion protection have been developed or new manufacturing processes for conventional-type coatings have been introduced. The former comprise e.g. the halogen effect and catalytic surface poisoning approaches, the latter uses e.g. self-propagating synthesis (SPS) routes. The paper will give a survey of the most recent developments in these areas and on their potential.
